Help Low-Wage Families in Southwestern Pennsylvania Keep More of What They Earn

Every tax season, the United Way of Allegheny County and the Free Tax Prep Campaign train and mobilize community volunteers like you from all walks of life (students, professionals, retirees) to provide free, quality income-tax preparation assistance for low-to-moderate income families. At Goodwill SWPA, we rely on volunteers like you to run our free tax filing programs on Pittsburgh's North Side and Lawrenceville neighborhoods.

In 2017, 480 volunteers prepared 10,410 tax returns and delivered more than $16.1 million in tax refunds back to local residents.

We train volunteer tax preparers to help individuals and families claim their maximum benefit and refund.

That’s money that can be used to make rent payments, pay utility bills, or put food on the table for households struggling to make ends meet.
In just three hours a week, you can…

•    Make a difference in someone’s financial life
•    Deliver economic benefits to neighbors in need
•    Gain valuable new skills

“I wanted to contribute in some way. [This was the] first volunteer work I’ve done that was more than just a one-off occasion.”

“My most significant memory would have to be the looks on clients’ faces when I would show them the amount of their tax refund. In today’s tough economy, every little bit helps and they would usually make a comment to that effect.”

“I learned that no matter how busy my schedule may be, it’s important to take time now and then to help others. You can never build up enough good Karma!”

It’s not too late to become a tax volunteer for this coming tax year!

If you are a student, professional, retiree – you can become a Free Tax Prep Volunteer!

Trained volunteer tax preparers commit to 3 or more hours each week during tax season. Most tax sites open in mid-January and close in mid-April. We request that you commit to the same day and time for the entire tax season. Free tax and software training for all new and returning volunteers is provided by the United Way at convenient times and locations throughout Pittsburgh. Volunteer training will be held in January. Training requirements vary by your level of experience and your tax site's requirements.  New volunteers must also complete a background check. After training, you must pass an IRS certification exam.
