Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania and CVS Health launched a new partnership today to provide retail skills training to people in the Pittsburgh community. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held to introduce a new Retail Skills Lab in Goodwill’s Workforce Development Center in Lawrenceville.
CVS Health has donated shelving, products, signage and training resources to create the state-of-the-art lab designed to provide students with real world experience in a retail environment. In the lab, students have access to an innovative classroom experience that includes job readiness and soft-skills training combined with classroom instruction, creating a pipeline of retail store employees.
"CVS Health is committed to helping underserved populations, including individuals with disabilities, mature workers, youth, veterans, and dislocated workers, as part of our commitment to building healthier and thriving communities,” said Ernie Dupont, Senior Director, Workforce Initiatives, CVS Health. “The lab at Goodwill will connect individuals with the job skills they need to gain stable employment in southwestern Pennsylvania and the surrounding region.”
The Retail Skills Lab is a new workforce training initiative for Goodwill, joining other training programs such as digital skills, food service, and housekeeping. This retail skills training will be focused on individuals who have disabilities and other barriers to employment and will offer real life work experience that could eventually lead to employment.
“Goodwill is proud to be involved in this partnership with CVS Health,” said Mike Smith, President/CEO, Goodwill SWPA. “As part of our mission of providing job training and placement, this Retail Skills Lab will connect people to careers in the retail industry while providing independence and community integration that positively impacts those we serve.”
On hand for the launch and ribbon cutting ceremony for the Retail Skills Lab were Mike Smith, President/CEO, Goodwill SWPA; Ernest Dupont, Senior Director of Workforce Initiatives, CVS Health; Bridget Barrett, Chief of Staff, Office of PA Representative Sara Innamorato; Mike Hall, Instructional Design Specialist, Goodwill Industries International; and Sean Ware, Goodwill Retail Vocational Training Instructor.
