In recognition of October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania has taken the lead in sharing best practices in the hiring of individuals with disabilities by introducing a free toolkit for employers in the region. The ProfitABILITY toolkit was designed to increase understanding of employing those with disabilities in the community while dispelling the myths and stigma often associated with these hiring practices.

The online toolkit, which was made possible with funding by the FISA Foundation and the PNC Foundation, provides an array of tools to help organizations increase their profits while meeting their legal obligations as they reach the more than $1 trillion disabilities community market share. The toolkit is just one of numerous services Goodwill SWPA provides for employers, including providing qualified, well-trained, motivated people to staff their organizations, job training programs to assist in employee education, and a variety of consulting services and money-saving options.

The kit provides resources that include:

  • Tools and practices to reduce turnover and build a talent pipeline.
  • Ways to save time and money spent on regulatory training. 
  • Reliable labor strategies from industry and government leaders.

“The toolkit offers a centralized location for the best information available to employers as they investigate the facts and learn how to comply with the laws for recruiting, hiring and advancing employment of people with disabilities,” explains Raeann Olander, Goodwill’s Director of Employer Engagement. “Ultimately, we are trying to help create inclusive work practices that industry leaders have used to increase their business profits.”

Some of the businesses that are outlined in the toolkit who have successfully utilized these best practices as leaders in disability inclusion include Boeing, Deloitte, Walgreens and 3M.  

“By sharing best practices, we can help people realize that hiring individuals with disabilities is a profitable business practice,” says Olander.
