For most retailers, the months of November and December are their prime holiday shopping months. The prime months for shopping at Goodwill are September and October -- the time when many shoppers are looking to thrift stores to find their perfect Halloween costume.
To meet the needs of shoppers, Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania has planned specialty Halloween “stores” within most of their area thrift stores to help make Halloween costume shopping easier and more fun for all. Called “Halloween Bootiques,” these specialty Halloween areas are the centerpiece of the largest Halloween campaign in the organization’s 99 year history.
Goodwill will kick off its Halloween festivities on September 15 with various in-store events and activities such as face painting, DJs and bands, activities and games for kids, free sweet treats, photo booths and raffles. (Activities vary from store to store.) Stores open at 9:00am and starting at 12:00 noon that day, donated goods will be 15% off (not available at North Side, Wexford, Whitehall, or the Heidelberg or North Versailles Outlet Stores). Goodwill store employees will also be in costume to help shoppers create their own look.
At the Goodwill “Bootiques,” shoppers will find various categories of new accessories, including Day of the Dead, Unicorns, Steampunk, Hats & Wigs, $5 and under, and Pets and Stuff. Of course, in the Bootiques and throughout Goodwill thrift stores, thousands of donated items are available to create the perfect costume.
To feature the pet costumes that can be found at Goodwill, the agency is partnering with Humane Animal Rescue for a pet adoption event on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at the Goodwill store located at 3 Urbano Way, Robinson Township, PA 15205 (across from Costco). The event will take place from 11am until 2pm and will feature pets for adoption wearing pet costumes from Goodwill stores. Additionally, Goodwill will be holding a Pet Costume Contest on Instagram. Participants can post a photo of their pets in costume with #bestfriendBOOtique and tag @goodwillswpa and @harsaveslives to be entered to win prizes such as gift cards and other pet items.
“We are going all out this Halloween season to make the experience for our shoppers as special as can be,” said Andrew Marano, Goodwill SWPA’s Vice President of Donated Goods Retail. “If someone wants to shop for Halloween, Goodwill is the place to go.”
Goodwill will also hold scavenger hunts at its stores throughout the month of October. Lucky shoppers who find a hidden pumpkin can win 50% off their purchases that day. Lastly, the organization will give away free trick or treat bags at its stores. For information on all of Goodwill SWPA’s Halloween activities, visit www.goodwillswpa.org/hallloween.
