Young people, ages 17-24, are invited to learn about Goodwill’s RISE (Reentry through Industry Specific Education) Project at an open house on Friday, October 14, 2016, from 11:00pm to 2:00pm at Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania’s South Side Facility at 2400 East Carson Street.
At the open house, interested participants will learn about the enrollment process, take a tour of the facility, see hands-on construction project demonstrations, and meet RISE staff and instructors. Light refreshments will be served. RISE is open to individuals who need their GED® as well as those who already have it.
RISE participants receive a nationally recognized certification as they are trained and prepared for work in construction and maintenance fields. In the four years of the RISE Project’s existence, nearly 200 individuals have participated, resulting in job placement in positions such as skilled laborers in machine manufacturing, construction, concrete, roofing and furniture repair.
The RISE Project provides hands-on vocational education integrated with academics, life skills and work readiness training, service learning and community service, job shadowing and internships. Training includes 14 weeks of vocational training in the following fields: carpentry, electrical, plumbing, brick masonry, landscaping, facilities maintenance, green building, weatherization and painting.
Participants receive help with transportation, free lunches, and a free set of hand tools. Participants will obtain a Home Builders Institute (HBI) Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate Training (PACT) Certificate in the construction industry and a Youth Policy Council Work-Ready Certificate. Participants will be eligible to take the apprenticeship test upon completion of the program.
In addition to Goodwill and HBI, RISE partners include the Three Rivers Workforce Investment Board, Allegheny County Juvenile Probation, and the Pennsylvania Career Technical Training Alliance.
Those interested can RSVP for the open house by contacting Whitney Miles at 412-632-1742. For more information on the RISE Project, visit www.goodwillswpa.org/vocational-training.
