Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania’s RISE (Reentry through Industry Specific Education) Project is currently seeking candidates for the program. Now entering its fifth year, the successful construction job-training program focuses on individuals who need to receive their GED®, however ten individuals who already have their high school diploma/GED® will also be accepted. As part of the RISE program, individuals who are in need of their GED® will be enrolled in Goodwill’s free GED® classes and can take all GED® tests at no cost.

In its first four years, nearly 200 individuals have participated in RISE, resulting in job placement in positions such as skilled laborers in machine manufacturing, construction, concrete, roofing and furniture repair.

The RISE Project is a construction job-training program created in conjunction with Home Builders Institute (HBI), a national leader for career training in the building industry.  Upon successful completion of the program, individuals will receive the award-winning HBI Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate in Building Construction Technology.  The curriculum for this certificate integrates work-based learning with vocational and academic skills training and includes job readiness, employability skills, career development, life skills, and on-the-job training.

The curriculum also encompasses trades and safety skills mastery in several competencies, including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, brick masonry, landscaping, facilities maintenance, painting, green building, and weatherization. Additionally, participants can also achieve their OSHA-30 Certificate upon successful completion of all OSHA-30 classes that are held in addition to the RISE Project classes.

All RISE Project participants will receive construction and life skills training, job placement assistance, paid and unpaid work experience, case management, and counseling. Additionally, the program includes free lunches, bus passes during the training period, driver’s education classes (if eligible), a paid stipend, and a set of tools upon successful completion.  The twelve-week training program will be conducted at Goodwill’s facility located at 2400 East Carson Street on Pittsburgh’s South Side.  Program hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00AM through 4:00PM.

Eligible candidates for the RISE Project are individuals between the ages of 17-24 who have a barrier to employment and reside in the city of Pittsburgh or Allegheny County.    In addition to Goodwill and HBI, RISE partners include the Three Rivers Workforce Investment Board, Allegheny County Juvenile Probation, and the Pennsylvania Career Technical Training Alliance.
